Deputy Director, Engineering Laboratory, NIST
Jason D. Averill is the Deputy Director of the Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He leads research and programs to advance measurement science, standards, and technologies for resilient buildings and communities, including fire protection engineering, structural performance under multi-hazard events, and community resilience planning.
At NIST, Averill has led landmark investigations and studies, including the National Construction Safety Team investigation of the Station Nightclub Fire and work supporting the development of community resilience planning guides. He has published extensively on fire dynamics, emergency egress, and performance-based design, and has served on national and international technical committees.
Averill holds engineering degrees and has received multiple awards for federal service and scientific leadership in building and fire research.
